Arthur Russell - That’s Us/Wild Combination
Now and again I will discover an artist that is so inconceivably talented that I find it hard to believe I had not heard of him/her/them before. Especially when it is someone as interwoven into the practices of other artists I hold in high regard, such as Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg. It is at these times that it becomes clear that all those hours spent scourging for new and undiscovered music really does pay off. It’s worth it for nuggets like this one.
Describing Arthur Russell is not something I will venture this time around. His genre-reach is simply too wide. On a single album, he would effortlessly wander through disco, folk, minimal beats not unlike Terry Rile and modern indie pop reminiscent of Caribou and most certainly Owen Pallett (plus more).
1360 Sherbrooke introduced me to Russell’s music over cocktails and dinner a week ago, and I haven’t stopped listening ever since.
Tonight I took the full leap and saw the film Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell – a recommendation-worthy look into the troubled and intricate mind of an artist outside of his own time.
Blissfully, Peacefully, Yours, Sincerely.
